Mark Your Calendars: Thursday, July 4th, 2024
That’s right, this year, Independence Day falls on a Thursday, giving you a fantastic opportunity for a long weekend celebration! Whether you’re planning a big barbecue or a quiet day at home, it’s the perfect occasion to gather with your loved ones, decked out in red, white, and blue, to commemorate the birth of our nation.
A Brief History of Independence Day
Although most of us covered this history lesson in school, we probably weren’t paying much attention.
Independence Day, commonly referred to as the Fourth of July, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
On this historic day, the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from British rule, paving the way for the birth of the United States of America. Since then, July 4th has become a symbol of American freedom, celebrated with fireworks, grand parades, and festive gatherings.
The first July 4th celebration took place in 1777. However, Independence Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1870, when Congress designated it as an unpaid holiday for federal employees. It wasn’t until 1938 that it was changed to a paid federal holiday.
Who Celebrates Independence Day? Everyone!
Independence Day is a nationwide celebration that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. From small towns to big cities, everyone gets involved in the festivities. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses come together to celebrate with picnics, cookouts, concerts, and community events.
On Independence Day, government offices and schools are closed. American flags proudly adorn homes and buildings, and communities light up the night with spectacular fireworks displays. Some of the most impressive shows are even broadcast on television.
