Save the Date: All of November 2024
Adoption Awareness Month is observed throughout the entire month of November. It’s a dedicated time to increase awareness about adoption, encourage family support, and celebrate the incredible families formed through adoption.
A Brief History of Adoption Awareness Month
Adoption Awareness Month began in 1976 in Massachusetts when then-Governor Michael Dukakis announced an Adoption Week (the first week of November) to promote awareness of the state’s growing number of foster children.
The idea quickly gained national traction, and in 1984 President Gerald Ford made Adoption Week a national event. This initiative focused on raising awareness about the thousands of children in foster care waiting for permanent, loving homes.
In 1995, it expanded to a month-long observance as proclaimed by President Bill Clinton.
Who Celebrates Adoption Awareness Month? Everyone!
Adoption Awareness Month is celebrated by families, adoption agencies, community organizations, and courthouses across the United States, where thousands of adoptions are finalized concurrently.
It’s a time for everyone to come together to share stories, provide resources, and encourage others to consider adoption. Schools, businesses, and local communities often host events and activities to promote awareness and education about adoption.
Get Involved: Fun Participation Ideas
Ready to show your support during Adoption Awareness Month? Here are some engaging ideas to help you make a difference:
- Share Your Story: If you’re an adoptive parent or adoptee, share your story on social media or within your community. Personal stories can inspire others and promote understanding.
- Host a Fundraiser: There were over 400,000 children in the American foster care system as of 2021. Organize a fundraiser to support local adoption agencies or foster care programs. Consider hosting a bake sale, silent auction, or charity walk to raise funds and awareness.
- Volunteer: Offer your time at local adoption agencies or foster care organizations. Whether it’s helping with administrative tasks or providing support at events, your involvement can make a big impact.
- Educational Events: Host or attend workshops and seminars to learn more about the adoption process, legal considerations, and the emotional aspects of adoption. Knowledge is key to supporting and understanding the adoption community.
- Adoption Drives: Every year, over 23,000 kids age out of the American foster care system. Work with local businesses or community centers to hold adoption drives. Provide information packets and resources to those interested in learning more about adoption.
- Support Adoptive Families: Reach out to adoptive families in your community and offer your support. This can be as simple as lending an ear, offering to babysit, or providing meals.
